From West End pit bands to solo trumpeter/singer/songwriter
Avelia released her first solo CD, From the Shadows, in 2019 with pianist Bruce Boardman and was delighted that her instrumental Contemplating Life reached the Finals of the UK Songwriting Contest 2019, and the other 2 instrumentals on the album reached the Semi Finals. She has since released several self-recorded singles, and has plans for many more.
In March 2020, 2 days after the first UK lockdown, Avelia began a series of weekly Facebook Live gigs and continued these on an occasional basis in 2021. However, she loves nothing better than playing gigs out in the real world, whether working solo with backing tracks, or as a duo with piano, and better still with a full band. Avelia performs a compelling mix of jazz standards and other well-known songs alongside her own original music.
After years of playing in West End show pit bands – e.g. Jolson, Calamity Jane, Cats & Starlight Express - a change in Avelia’s family circumstances led to her revisiting an earlier existence as a trumpeter/singer. Essentially based in jazz, Avelia’s music naturally draws on diverse influences, having played in a range of soca, funk, Latin, jazz and function bands throughout her career, following training as a classical trumpet player at the Royal Academy of Music.
